The key challenges faced by maintaining public utilities are as follows:
- Lightning can cause circuit breakers to trip. There is no alerting system when the breakers trip. It may be days or weeks before someone is alerted that the lights are out. Unlit areas can be an opportunity for criminals.
- Light bulbs fuse from time to time. Again, it is difficult and costly to check them periodically.
- The conventional method to identify and rectify the failure is time consuming and expensive.
- At different times of the year, sunrise and sunset timings change. With the use of the traditional time, it is costly to change the time of turning on and off lights. This results in inefficient use of electricity.
The iSMAC Solution
The purpose of iSMAC is to introduce a more efficient and effective method of maintenance for street lights and other public lighting facilities. iSMAC uses the internet to provide immediate alerts when lights are not working, while also providing energy usage profiles to aid with increasing energy efficiency.
With the iSMAC solution, users are supplied with the ability to understand their street lighting consumption pattern. They are also able to monitor light status in high detail, with relative ease, and in real-time.

The iSCADA platform provides users a solution that will give the overview of streetlight feeder pillars. This helps monitor the energy consumption, the status of the feeder, and alerts the client to any unauthorized access to the feeder.
iSMAC has three layers of technology; this is to bring the maximum possible benefit to the user and to ensure the solution delivers high availability while being energy efficient.
Layer 1: iSCADA monitoring.
iSCADA monitors and provide remote control output points for the site. This allows users:

Layer 2: Manage the tripping of ELCBs due to lightning strikes
This layer deploys an approved Surge Protection Device (SPD), with typical ratings of 80kA but can be increased to 200kA if so required. iSCADA shall provide an alert for the SPD to be replaced if damage occurs.
Layer 3: Onsite intelligent ELCB deployment.
The intelligent ELCB shall be able to perform the following:
- Filter out noise from surges to avoid nuisance tripping
- Maintain safety level to prevent electrocution.
- Input for remote reset when used with iSCADA
University of Malaya, or UM, Malaysia's oldest university, is situated on a 922 acre (373.12 hectare) campus in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur. It currently has 12 Faculties, 2 Academies and 3 Centres.
UM has a large river (Klang river) running through the campus, and in the past has had the recurring problem of it flooding over. During heavy rain, the river can start to overflow in minutes, leaving little time for counter measures to be made. To face this issue, the iSCADA system is employed in UM to assist in flood prevention. The system monitors the water level of the river. If the water reaches danger levels, management personnel are notified through SMS, and the sounder and beacon are triggered.
Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam
The iSMAC solution was adopted by the Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (Shah Alam City Council) as the city wide solution for street light monitoring and maintenance.
Due to its IoT based platform, the iSMAC solution does not require expensive software or licensing fees. Instead, it operates on an annual monitoring and maintenance fee that also includes a guarantee for the iSMAC equipment. Additionally, iSMAC is able to accurately provide lamp status without requiring individual lamp monitoring sensors, leading to a great reduction in the cost for the system.
In MBSA’s case, the iSMAC solution was able to be deployed at over 1,600 feeder pillars, for just about USD $2.1 million. This works out to be roughly USD $1,300 per feeder pillar. Considering that each feeder pillar will provide power to an average of 50 lamps, MBSA had a cost per lamp of about USD $26. This included annual monitoring fees as well as onsite training for the operator’s personnel.
