iSCADA & the Internet of Things

Recently, the Internet of Things (IoT) has become increasingly pervasive across all industries, finding applications everywhere from agriculture to transportation to healthcare. Within the next few decades, almost all the devices in our world will be connected. As such, the Internet of Things is one of the transformational trends that will shape the future of businesses today and beyond.

By combining cloud computing and the IoT, Devices World aims to increase efficiency in our everyday tasks by helping customers resolve issues with inefficiency, monitor their facilities, and implement advanced solutions with iSCADA software and the cloud-based operating system for the Industrial Internet. The IoT generates massive amounts of data, while cloud computing provides a pathway for it to travel to its destination. Devices World strives to provide a comprehensive solution by implementing cloud computing and the IoT technology in your operational challenges.

What is iSCADA?

iSCADA by Devices World allows for the monitoring of information and the control of devices in real time from any location.

iSCADA builds on two key technologies: SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition, widely used in control rooms for industries such as power, telecommunications, and oil & gas) and IoT (the Internet of Things). With features from these two technologies working in combination, iSCADA is able to deliver to users detailed information about virtually any device or sensor regardless of distance.

How Does iSCADA Work?

Within facilities, there are key locations where sensors can measure valuable information about factors such as power usage, water usage, or temperature. iSCADA Gateway devices are installed in these locations to collect information from the sensors.

The iSCADA Gateway transmits collected site data via the internet, thus allowing any authorised user access to all information and data via the web.

The iSCADA platform is highly scalable, allowing for the monitoring of any number of sites and systems. Depending on the needs of its users, the iSCADA platform could be implemented in a limited fashion and then expanded gradually, or it could be rolled out across a massive system for widespread integration.

Intel Chip

"Devices World has partnered with Intel to enhance the iSCADA system through the use of an Intel Chip. Previous chips utilized in the iSCADA system have become outdated and no longer fulfil the requirements needed to achieve the technical processes of the gateway. The Intel Chip that is in the iSCADA gateway is the Intel® Quark™ SoC X1021. This chip provides state of the art processing capabilities, and is the core hardware in the iSCADA system.

Benefits of iSCADA Architecture

Low Cost Of Data Transmission

All communications between iSCADA devices, servers and users are Internet based, allowing for lower costs than other methods of transmission.

Universally Accepted User Interface

iSCADA features familiar and user-friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI). Its intuitive simplicity places information in the hands of managers and other decision makers. The familiarity of the interface allows for immediate adoption by engineers and management.

Information Consolidation

All data is stored in a central database on the Internet, allowing users global access to consolidated data from any number of remote sites, irrespective of their geographical location.

Vendor-Independent Integration

The iSCADA solution is not locked to any specific vendor or provider. Our data loggers, server backend, and user interface are specifically designed to integrate data from any asset, regardless of vendor.

Hosted Date Acquisition

With iSCADA, you pay only for data delivered to your desktop. This removes the complexities of owning, maintaining, and managing data acquisition infrastructure.

Who Can Use iSCADA?

Anyone can use iSCADA.
Data is delivered through the universal user interface (the web browser) and information is organized in a familiar file/folder system. No in-depth computer expertise is required. The value of any information increases with the number of people using it. Your iSCADA system administrator may create user accounts as needed to access the system. These may include top management, subsidiary heads, engineering department, finance department, maintenance contractors and field technicians.

For example, anyone in the organization can get answers to critical questions by simply logging in to the iSCADA system:

  1. Top management: What is the overall Availability Index of all assets across the enterprise for this year?
  2. Middle management: Is the newly appointed contractor performing better than the previous one?
  3. Engineering: Does the system trip more frequently in the dry or wet season?
  4. Technician/contractor: What is the most recent alarm, and where is it coming from?

Get these answers immediately instead of waiting for departmental reports.
